Samsung Galaxy A70 - Review, Specifications, Price, Pros and Cons

We have seen lots of improvement to the Samsung Galaxy A Series in 2019 and the Galaxy A70 is not an exception. Samsung delivered a fantastic product in Galaxy A30, A40and A50, with this Galaxy A70, the company aimed at hitting a higher mid-range device with better and improved performance.

Also, just like other A series, the device was launched with a premium design, Super AMOLED screen, an on-screen fingerprint reader, and triple camera (like the Galaxy A50). But, it has a bigger battery capacity as compared to others. Let's look at the specification details.

Samsung pledged to use eco-friendly packaging for new product and that is what we have been seeing 2019. The Galaxy A70 comes in a plain white box with the phone branding on top. The listed items above are what you will see inside of the box.

Samsung Galaxy A70 - Design and Display
  • 164.3 x 76.7 x 7.9mm Dimension
  • 183 grams Weight
  • Waterdrop notch
  • USB-C port
  • Headphone jack
  • An optical on-display fingerprint scanner
  • 6.7-inches Full HD+, 20:9 Aspect ratio Super AMOLED Display

The Galaxy A70 is obviously the higher version of the Galaxy A50, and the design is very much identical to that of the Galaxy A30, A40, and A50. However, the Samsung Galaxy A70 is made with a glass and metal design, with the glass on the front and rear of the phone, sandwiching a metal frame, providing a strong and premium feel that looks great and perfect for a handheld.

The device measures a 164.3 x 76.7 x 7.9mm dimension and it isn't overly heavy (weighing 183g). The power and volume button is on the right side in easy-to-reach position, while on the base the Galaxy A70 packs a headphone jack which is quite larger than it's siblings.

There's also a speaker and a USB-C port for charging at the bottom, while the SIM tray is found at the top of the left side. The device comes in multiple colors so you will be able to pick from one of four colors: black, blue, pink and white.

Again, one of the Galaxy A70's better quality is the huge, 6.7-inch display with a bright and colorful sAMOLED panel and a Full HD+ (1080 x 2400) resolution providing an excellent viewing experience for a mid-range phone. There is a small notch at the top of the screen, something Samsung calls its Infinity-U Display.

Samsung Galaxy A70 - Performance and Storage
  • Octa-core Snapdragon 675
  • 6GB of RAM
  • Adreno 612 GPU
  • 128GB storage
  • microSD expansion slot
The Galaxy A70 joins the league of smartphone that is powered by the Octa-core Snapdragon 675 chipset. This chipset provides great performance and it is the same processor found in other high-end smartphones like the Redmi Note 7 Pro as well as the Vivo V15 Pro. The processor has a CPU speed clocked at 2 GHz, 1.7 GHz to ensures a fast performance that can withstand multitasking and heavy usage (even gaming).

In addition to aiding a better performance, the phone ships with 128GB of massive storage capacity, of which about 108GB is available at first boot. The storage can be expanded via the dedicated microSD card slot up to 512GB giving you more room to save more data and files. The phone also has dual nano SIM card slots that support VoLTE on both.

Samsung Galaxy A70 - Camera
  • 32MP rear sensor, f/1.7 aperture
  • 8MP 120-degree, wide-angle camera
  • 5MP depth sensor
  • 32MP front-facing camera
  • Rear LED flashlight
  • UHD 4K (3840 x 2160)@30fps Video Recording
No doubt, image capabilities is one of the major deciding factors when upgrading or changing your device. The Samsung Galaxy A70 comes with three rear cameras, consisting of a main 32MP (f/1.7) snapper, an 8MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide angle, 123 degree lens and a 5MP (f/2.2) depth camera for portrait mode effects (where the background is kinda blurred).

And if you’re the kind of person who is constantly posting selfies and images on social media, the front camera will be very amazing to you (although, the device does not support front flash). The front camera is a 32MP image shot. The camera defaults to pixel-binning images after taking photos.

For video recording, the Galaxy A70 goes up to 4K resolution at 30fps, but there is no stabilization available. The camera can shoot 480fps slow motion video at 720p resolution, which is great if you want to get some creative shots, though you will need adequate light for quality results.

Samsung Galaxy A70 - Battery

The large battery capacity is a huge advantage of the Galaxy A70. The massive 4,500mAh battery cell in the Galaxy A70 ensures that you will easily get a full day of use and probably more. On average, the phone is expected to last for two full days.

Also, it is very easy to top off the battery. The A70 is the first Samsung phone to ship with support for 25W fast charging. While not as fast as some of the competing standards like VOOC or Dash, you can still charge the battery in under two hours.

Samsung Galaxy A70 - Connectivity and Security
  • USB Type-C
  • USB 2.0
  • ANT+
  • Bluetooth v5.0 (LE up to 2 Mbps)
  • Hotspot
  • 3.5 mm Stereo
  • GPS, Glonass, Beidou, Galileo
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • On-screen fingerprint scanner
  • Facelock
A second and more useful upgrade is support for Samsung Pay. Outside of Samsung’s flagships, the A70 is the first device to support MST. Most point-of-sale (POS) terminals do not support NFC, which means MST is necessary for tap-and-go payments. MST allows the Galaxy A70 to emulate the swiping action of your debit card at payment terminals that lack NFC.

Samsung Galaxy A70 Price and Availablity in Nigeria

The Samsung Galaxy A70 is currently available at the price of $453.94. The price in Nigeria ranges between 130,000 Naira and 160,000 Naira. The device is listed on Jumia Nigeria currently for 131,999.

Also, the price may differ depending on where you are buying it from.

Samsung Galaxy A70 - Pros
  • Massive battery capacity
  • Samsung Pay with MST support
  • Better performance that is good for gaming and multitasking
  • Beautiful design and great display size
  • Has a dedicated microSD card slot
  • Quality camera for a good picture and video recording
Samsung Galaxy A70 - Cons
  • Scratch prom material
  • No front flash
Finally, the Samsung Galaxy A70 is a solid mid-range smartphone with the right specs in the right places. If users can afford the device at its price, it could be a very attractive offering. Currently, the A70 is the best upper-mid range smartphones on the market. Between the refined experience and phenomenal battery life.
